Is it normal to have sweaty feet?
Sweating of the feet is a natural process that helps to regulate body temperature and eliminate toxins. The feet have numerous sweat glands which produce sweat in response to heat, stress, physical exertion or emotion. Sweat consists mainly of water and mineral salts, and has no odour in itself.
What factors contribute to excessive sweating and foot odour?
Some people’s feet sweat more than others’, without this being linked to any health problem. This is known as plantar hyperhidrosis, which is characterised by excessive sweating of the feet. This condition may be caused by genetic, hormonal, neurological or medication-related factors.
Excessive sweating of the feet encourages the growth of bacteria that cause unpleasant odours. In fact, sweat creates a warm, moist environment that is ideal for the proliferation of micro-organisms that feed on the organic waste present on the skin. These bacteria produce foul-smelling substances which escape through the pores and permeate the socks and shoes.
Perspiration and foot odour can also be exacerbated by certain external factors such as:
- Wearing closed shoes and socks made of synthetic materials, which prevent the feet from breathing and promote maceration.
- Poor foot hygiene, which allows dead skin cells and impurities to build up on the skin.
- Fungal infections, which often affect the toes and the soles of the feet, causing irritation, itching and unpleasant odours.
- Diet, which can influence the composition and odour of sweat. Certain foods, such as garlic, onions, cheese and spices, can make you sweat more and cause your sweat to smell stronger.
Plantar hyperhidrosis: how can I stop my feet from sweating?
There are ways to minimise sweating and reduce the discomfort caused by sweaty feet. Here are some tips to follow:
- Choose leather or canvas shoes, which allow your feet to breathe, and avoid synthetic materials that trap moisture. Alternate between pairs of shoes to give them time to dry between uses.
- Wear socks made of cotton or natural fibres, which absorb sweat and prevent chafing. Change your socks every day, or even several times a day if you sweat a lot.
- Wash your feet every day with a mild soap and dry them thoroughly, especially between your toes. You can also take foot baths using lukewarm water and vinegar, bicarbonate of soda or salt, which have astringent and antibacterial properties.
- Apply a deodorant or antiperspirant for the feet, which will reduce sweat production and odours. Choose a product suitable for your skin type and follow the instructions for use.
- Use insoles or absorbent powders, which will soak up moisture and odours in your shoes. You can also put talcum powder or cornflour in your socks to keep your feet dry.
- Walk barefoot whenever possible, to let your feet breathe and prevent maceration.
