What should you do in case of minor burns and superficial wounds?

Minor burns and injuries are common accidents in everyday life and affect people of all ages. Superficial burns occur when the skin comes into direct contact with a significant source of heat. When the skin on a non-sensitive area is damaged as a result of a burn, the initial steps are the most important in order to protect the wound from possible infection and to relieve the pain caused by the burn. Discover our tips for treating first- and second-degree superficial burns and superficial injuries.

The first step: cool the burn with cold water

First and foremost, it is important to cool the burn with cold or lukewarm water, using low water pressure. The earlier this is done, the more effective it is. This essential step reduces local heat and prevents the inflammation from spreading. One easy-to-remember golden rule is the rule of three 15s:

  • The burn should be rinsed with water at 15-20 °C
  • Applied approximately 15 centimetres from the injured tissue
  • For a minimum of 15 minutes.

It is then important to dry the skin thoroughly without rubbing, and to apply the appropriate skincare products to provide long-lasting pain relief. If blisters are present, you should never pierce them; instead, you should protect them.

For superficial burns and injuries, URGO has the solution!

It is advisable to protect burnt skin.

To this end, URGO has developed a complete range dedicated to superficial burns and injuries. A sterile Lipid-Colloid Technology dressing or tulle of the URGO burns-wounds type is the protection to be applied to the area to be treated in order to relieve pain caused following a burn or superficial wound and promote healing. This tulle adapts perfectly to your movements and allows the wound to breathe, thanks to its patented technology which maintains a moist environment conducive to healing. It also prevents adherence to the wound, making it easier to remove the dressing.

Another option for your burns and superficial injuries?

For 1st and 2nd degree burns and superficial wounds, URGO honey healing dressing provides relief and promotes skin healing thanks to its Hydro-Honey pad that absorbs exudate. Its semi-permeable, transparent, waterproof backing is water-resistant, allows the skin to breathe and provides discreet protection.

Honey healing balm also soothes superficial wounds (such as cuts and abrasions), or chronic wounds (e.g. ulcers) and 1st and 2nd degree burns. It moisturises and promotes the healing process by creating an environment conducive to wound healing.

What is a burn?

A superficial burn is a lesion of the epidermis (upper layer of the skin) most often caused by more or less prolonged contact with a significant heat source. Burns have different degrees of severity depending on the amount and depth of injury caused. Superficial first-degree and second-degree burns involve damage to the epidermis, causing redness, dryness and pain. Where the burn is more severe – such as a superficial second-degree burn – it may cause a blister to form, either immediately or within hours of the burn occurring. Deep 2nd and 3rd degree burns are more severe and dangerous due to the increased risk of infection and can cause irreversible injuries. They therefore require more intensive and specialised care provided by healthcare professionals.
