Avoid some common mistakes
When they have a fungal nail infection, many people turn to cosmetic nail varnishes – which are not suitable for infected nails – to hide the unsightly appearance. This is a mistake for several reasons. Firstly, this is often done at the expense of treatment that would limit the spread of the fungal infection. Furthermore, cosmetic nail varnishes are impermeable and therefore do not allow the nail to breathe, creating an environment conducive to the development of fungal infections.²
Another common mistake is to reuse manicure tools (nail files, nail clippers, brushes, etc.) on other nails after they have come into contact with an infected nail. Fungal nail infection is highly contagious; manicure tools used on an infected nail must be used exclusively on that nail, otherwise there is a risk that the fungus will spread to healthy nails. This risk also applies when manicure tools are shared between someone with a fungal nail infection and someone who does not have the condition.
Finally, you should not simply do nothing, nor should you allow the infected nail to macerate (by wearing socks all the time, for example), as the fungal infection will continue to spread and the appearance of the nail is likely to deteriorate.
