Cracked feet: definition
In response to external stresses, repeated friction and the pressure exerted by walking, the skin on the feet tends to thicken in the areas under the greatest strain. Over time and if nothing is done, these calluses sometimes end up splitting and you see cracks in the feet. The skin is dry and lacks hydration, so you feel uncomfortable sensations of tightness, roughness, discomfort or even pain. But in order to take action, we need to ask ourselves how cracks form on our feet.
What causes cracked feet?
The skin on the feet can become particularly sensitive as this area is subjected to a great deal of strain on a daily basis.
Walking with overly tight shoes
People who walk a lot or who have to stand for long periods are often prone to cracked feet. Indeed, repeated friction and pressure tend to attack the upper layer of the epidermis, which eventually cracks in certain places (1). That is why it is important to avoid shoes that are too tight or too small, and instead choose shoes that are the right size for you and suit the shape of your foot. This habit will provide you with the necessary comfort and help prevent cracks from forming on your feet.
Changes in temperature
You should also be aware that changes in temperature can make the skin on your hands – and on your feet – more delicate. In winter, the cold tends to dry out the skin, and this lack of moisture can lead to chapping, itching, calluses and cracks on the feet(1). In summer, the same phenomenon can be observed as a result of walking barefoot, exposure to sand or sea water, or wearing open-toed shoes that do not provide adequate support for the foot.
I have cracked feet - what should I do?
To avoid ending up with a crack in your foot, it is important to keep an eye on the condition of your skin, particularly during the winter months. From the first signs of dehydration, it is necessary to take care of your feet by offering them a good warm bath, exfoliating to remove dead skin or applying shea butter to nourish the epidermis deep down (1). Make sure you also take the right steps to avoid the main causes of cracked feet.
